VMWare on Ubuntu

Installing VMWare On Ubuntu

Here’s my kernel: Linux ambient 2.6.15-12-amd64-generic #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Jan 4 05:47:28 UTC 2006 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Unpack the tarball for VMWare

Run ‘sudo ./vmware-install.pl’ and go through the process. Default answers are OK.

At some point it will say it is installed fully and needs to configure running ‘vmware-configure.pl’ – you can say ‘yes’ to run it automagically.

It will complain that none of it’s modules are usable with your kernel. It will complain about not being able to find kernel headers that match.

VMWare’s config is looking for the source headers in [/lib/modules/2.6.15-12-amd64-generic/build/include] It finds them and starts building. Note You need GCC 4.0 installed (you should have it by default).

Now it’s asking about setup. These are self explanitory. Although a lot of the networking based questions seem to be quite convoluted.

Once it is done you can then run ‘vmware’ from your favorite launcher. The config app also placed launcher files in Applications -> System Tools. VMWare Player and VMWare Workstation.

Everything seems well. Of course, you’ll have to enter your valid serial number before doing anything. Good luck!

You can uninstall VMWare clealy at any time using ‘sudo vmware-uninstall.pl’
